Acting Opportunities

Extracurricular Acting Opportunities

The Lakewood High School Theatre Company offers a variety of extra-curricular acting opportunities for students passionate about performance. These include mainstage productions, such as plays and musicals, as well as student-directed one-acts and improv showcases. Outside of mainstage productions, the LHSTC provides opportunities to students to attend workshops and festivals, such as Jeffco Theatre Festival and ThesCon, as well as participate in competitions, such as English Speakers Union or Individual Events. No matter your skill level, the LHSTC offers a welcoming and passionate community where everyone is encouraged to grow and refine their talents.

Fall Plays

The LHSTC offers at least one fully staged fall production, typically featuring a classic or contemporary play that challenges students with complex characters and compelling storytelling. This production allows students to refine their acting skills, collaborate with a dedicated cast and crew, and perform in a professionally designed theatrical setting. It also offers an immersive experience that simulates real-world theatre production, preparing students for future creative endeavors.

This year, the LHSTC performed The Laramie Project for it's fall play.  To see photos of the production, click HERE (Act 1) and HERE (Act 2).

Underclassman Production

Designed specifically for freshmen and sophomores, this production gives younger students an opportunity to perform in a smaller-scale, low-pressure show while learning the fundamentals of theatre performance. It provides valuable onstage experience early in their high school journey, helping them build confidence and prepare for larger productions in the future. Additionally, it creates a supportive environment where emerging talent can thrive and form the foundation for more advanced roles later on.

This year, the LHSTC performed Almost, Maine for it's underclassman production, to see photos of the production, click HERE.

Spring Musical

The Spring Musical is LHSTC’s largest and most elaborate production, featuring singing, acting, and dancing with full orchestration, intricate set designs, and professional-level choreography. This show offers students a chance to engage in high-energy musical theatre and often includes large ensemble numbers, making it an exciting and dynamic experience for performers of all backgrounds. Its scale and complexity provide a unique platform for students to showcase their multifaceted talents while experiencing the rigors of professional production.

This year, the LHSTC is performing Nice Work If You Can Get It.  To learn more about the upcoming production, click HERE.

Spring One Acts

This annual production features a collection of Advanced Acting written and directed short plays, giving students a chance to act in 10-15 minute shows. Spring One Acts encourage creativity and allow actors to explore their own skills and technique in a more intamite and lower risk setting.  It also serves as an opportunity where people who do not normally act have the opportunity to be onstage and develop new skills.

This year's Spring One Acts will be performed on May 2nd at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.  More information to come at a later date.

Jeffco Theatre Festival

Jeffco Theatre Fest is a one-day, district-wide theatre festival where students from across Jefferson County gather to attend workshops, perform scenes and monologues, and connect with fellow theatre students and educators. This festival provides valuable opportunities for students to receive professional feedback, expand their knowledge of theatre arts, and showcase their talents in a collaborative and supportive environment. It also fosters community engagement and broadens students' perspectives by exposing them to a diverse range of theatrical styles and techniques.

ThesCon

The largest high school theatre conferences in the state with over 5000 students attending annually, ThesCon is a three-day event packed with workshops, performances, college auditions, and networking opportunities. Students can participate in specialized training sessions led by theatre professionals, watch high-quality productions, and compete for scholarships and performance opportunities. ThesCon is only available to inducted Thespians and students in Advanced Acting.

Individual Event Competitions

These competitions allow students to present monologues, duet scenes, musical theatre pieces, and other performance pieces for professional adjudication at Jeffco Theatre Fest and ThesCon. Performances are evaluated based on acting technique, stage presence, and emotional depth, with top competitors earning the chance to advance to state and national levels. Participating in IE Competitions pushes students to excel under pressure while providing critical feedback that fuels their artistic growth and ambition.

ESU Shakespeare Competition

This prestigious competition challenges students to perform monologues and sonnets from Shakespeare’s works, focusing on classical acting techniques, vocal delivery, and text analysis. Winners at the school level have the chance to advance to regional, state, and even national levels, competing against other talented performers while honing their skills in Shakespearean performance. The experience deepens students' understanding of classical literature while instilling discipline and a refined sense of theatricality.

Acting Practicums

In addition to all of the extracurricular acting opportunities that the LHSTC offers, many advanced LHS Theatre classes provide practicums.  These practicums are the culmination of a semesters-worth of work in class, where they are performed in front of an audience. From the Advanced Actor's Showcase to the Unified Theatre production, students of all talents are given the opportunity to perform what they have worked on in class.

Advanced Actor's Showcase

The Advanced Acting Showcase is the showcase of all of the Individual Event scenes that Advanced Actors performed at ThesCon. This year, over 75% of the scenes performed received an the highest possible overall score, a 'superior,' and qualified for the International Thespian Conference.  In the preparation of this production, students create a through line in order to connect every scene and learn about all aspects of producing a show, from stage management and lighting design to choreography, students get the opportunity to branch out and develop new skills.

This year's Actor's Showcase, Save The Date, was recently performed and photos can be found HERE.

Unified Theatre Production

The Unified Theatre production is the result of the Unified Theatre class at Lakewood.  Bringing together students of all abilities, the Unified Theatre production creates an environment where traditional cast members and students from integrated programs work side by side.  Participants learn valuable communication and problem-solving skills while contributing to a production that highlights each individual's unique talents.
